“From Canon to Clicks: Literary Evaluation in the Digital Culture”

Facultad de Filología, Plaza Menéndez Pelayo, Madrid, España

Conferencia de Massimo Salgaro (Università di Verona)

“From Canon to Clicks: Literary Evaluation in the Digital Culture”

24/4/26 a las 13:00 en el PARANINFO del Edificio A de la Facultad de Filología, Universidad Complutense de Madrid

The internet has changed, among others, our concept of literary value. The rise of artificial intelligence has significantly impacted the art world, raising questions about authorship and creativity—especially as AI-generated novels, TV series, and music become more common. Our experiment explored how the mere framing of authorship of AI-generated literature modulates judgments of value, from the point of view of AI itself. We asked a state-of-the-art language model to craft three short stories in the style of Roald Dahl. A second large language model then evaluated those same texts by filling out a detailed Likert-based questionnaire under three different framings of authorship: human-only, AI-only, and human–AI collaboration. Although the linguistic artefacts were identical, attribution reshaped appraisal. Stories labeled as human-authored received the highest ratings for creativity, narrative quality, and inclusivity, whereas those attributed to AI—especially when presented as solely AI-authored—consistently scored lower across all dimensions. This pattern reveals a persistent bias against AI authorship, regardless of the actual quality or inclusiveness of the content: one that even algorithms themselves reproduce when invited to judge their own work.
