This 3-week course aims at providing students with the necessary linguistic skills to improve their writing style for their thesis dissertation. Therefore, the course objectives are the following:
- To reflect on the student’s process of academic writing in English, hence identiying mistakes and ways to correct them.
- To learn specific grammatical and lexical structures of English academic writing.
As far as the course contents are concerned, they are subdivided into two main parts (from general to specific):
- AN INTRODUCTION TO ACADEMIC WRITING
- An introduction to British English vs. American English; formal vs. informal English.
- Writing structures: sentences, paragraphs, and sections.
- Sentence types and grammar.
- Academic writing vocabulary.
- Punctuation.
- WRITING A THESIS DISSERTATION IN ENGLISH
- The structure of the your written thesis. Abstract vs. summary. The title.
- The introductory chapter.
- Materials and method: background chapters; methodology.
- The results chapter.
- The discussion chapter.
- The conclusion chapter.
- Revising a draft; proofreading.

DESTINATARIOS: Estudiantes de cualquier programa de doctorado de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid con un nivel de inglés B2 en adelante que vayan a escribir su tesis total o parcialmente en inglés.
