This 3-week course encourages students to improve their own academic writing style in English to publish articles in scientific journals. Therefore, the course objectives are the following:
- To reflect on the student’s process of academic writing in English, hence identiying mistakes and ways to correct them.
- To learn specific grammatical and lexical structures of English academic writing.
As far as the course contents are concerned, they are subdivided into two main parts (from general to specific):
- AN INTRODUCTION TO ACADEMIC WRITING
- An introduction to British English vs. American English; formal vs. informal English.
- Writing structures: sentences, paragraphs, and sections.
- Sentence types and grammar.
- Academic writing vocabulary.
- Punctuation.
- WRITING A SCIENTIFIC ARTICLE 2.1. The structure of the article.
- How to write a title.
- How to write an abstract.
- Writing bigger sections of your article: the introduction, literature review and state of the art, methodology, results, discussion of results, and conclusion.
Academic writing skills: defining, comparing, evaluating, highlighting, describing figures and tables, paraphrasing, summarizing, and citing sources.
