Nonnus of Panopolis in Context V: Poetic Frontiers

Following conferences on Nonnus of Panopolis at the Universities of Crete (2011), Vienna (2013), Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski in Warsaw (2015) and Ghent (2018), we are pleased to announce the Internacional Conference "Nonnus of Panopolis in Context V", which will take place at the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain), 16-20 May 2023.

The theme of this edition is "Poetic Frontiers" in Nonnus’ poetry and its Late Antique context. We aim to address, among other, the following topics: How do Nonnus' epics relate to, sidestep, avoid, uphold generic limits? What are the generic markers introduced in the transformation of the Gospel of John into the Paraphrase? How can we tell the difference between a Christian poem and a 'pagan' one? Is the Dionysiaca a Christian poem? Is there such a thing as a Homeric reference and if so what does it look like? What limits the reading of Nonnus' poems as evidence for cultural history?

Venue:

May 17-19, 2023: Salón de Grados. Facultad de Filología (edificio A). Universidad Complutense. Plaza Menéndez Pelayo s/n, 28040 Madrid.

May 20th, 2023: Salón de Actos. Museo de San Isidro. Plaza de San Andrés, 2, 28005 Madrid.
