Course for Doctoral students from the Complutense University of Madrid, registered in the 2024-2025 academic year

The course introduces current trends in both institutional and individual science strategy with a specific emphasis on the challenges that young scholars face. Science strategy is a new and rapidly developing discipline that provides useful mentorship in many parts of academic life, from supporting publication success to career planning. As the main considerations of the course holds for all academic fields, participating on the course will be useful for all doctoral students, irrespectively of their specific field of research. Besides an introduction to the current state of art, we discuss possible scenarios for the future of the academia with respect to the skyrocketing influence of AI in academic research and publishing.

The students will familiarize themselves with the following topics:

• What is science strategy.

•  The past, present, and future of academic knowledge production.

• How the international publishing industry works.

• How to develop competitive research plans.

• How to find the most appropriate methodologies.

• How to write a bulletproof theoretical framework.

• How to report and discuss research findings.

• The composition of international research papers.

• Journal selection and research promotion.

• Some remarks on high-quality research in the age of AI.

• Some remarks on academic writing in the age of AI.

• Some remarks on publishing in the age of AI.

• Some remarks on academic career planning in the age of AI.

• Stick or twist: towards a new identity of the academia.
